Calculate your exact GST late fee for GSTR-3B or GSTR-1 in seconds — turnover-based caps, CGST/SGST split, and interest under Section 50, all in one free tool.
A GST late fee calculator works out the exact penalty for filing your GSTR-3B or GSTR-1 return after the due date. It's built for GST-registered businesses, freelancers with GST registration, small business owners, and Chartered Accountants who need a quick, accurate figure before paying through the GST portal. Enter your due date, filing date, and turnover — the calculator does the rest, including the CGST/SGST split and, if you provide your tax liability, the interest owed as well.
Late filing under GST is rarely a one-time cost. A single missed monthly deadline compounds daily, and once a taxpayer falls behind on several tax periods, the fee is calculated separately for every pending return.
Section 47 of the CGST Act, 2017 empowers the government to levy a late fee for delayed return filing. The actual per-day rate and cap come from Notification No. 19/2021-Central Tax and 20/2021-Central Tax, dated 1 June 2021.
Late Fee = Number of Days Delayed × Per-Day Rate
(capped at the maximum limit for your category)
Regular return (with tax liability):
Per-day rate = ₹50 (₹25 CGST + ₹25 SGST)
Cap = ₹2,000 (turnover up to ₹1.5 Cr)
= ₹5,000 (turnover ₹1.5 Cr – ₹5 Cr)
= ₹10,000 (turnover above ₹5 Cr)
Nil return:
Per-day rate = ₹20 (₹10 CGST + ₹10 SGST)
Cap = ₹500
Interest (Section 50, separate from late fee):
Interest = Net Tax Liability × 18% p.a. × (Days Delayed ÷ 365)Late fee is charged per return, per act — CGST and SGST are computed and paid separately, and IGST is never part of a late fee calculation.
Rahul runs a small trading business with an annual turnover of ₹80 lakh. His GSTR-3B for June 2026 was due on 20 July 2026, but he files it on 5 August 2026 — 16 days late. His net tax liability for the month is ₹40,000.
If Rahul had instead delayed by 45 days, raw late fee would be 45 × ₹50 = ₹2,250 — but the ₹2,000 cap kicks in, so he pays exactly ₹2,000, not ₹2,250.
The ₹50/day (regular) and ₹20/day (Nil) rates, along with the turnover-based caps, have applied since 1 June 2021 under Notifications 19/2021-CT and 20/2021-CT, and remain unchanged through FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27. Since January 2026, the GST portal is reported to calculate interest on delayed tax payment by netting off the minimum cash balance already sitting in your Electronic Cash Ledger during the delay period — a change that can lower the interest payable compared to a flat calculation on the full unpaid amount. [VERIFY] Always cross-check the final figure on the GST portal before payment, since portal-side ledger adjustments aren't reflected in a standalone calculator.
It's ₹50 per day (₹25 CGST + ₹25 SGST) for a regular return with tax liability, capped between ₹2,000 and ₹10,000 based on your annual turnover. Nil returns attract ₹20 per day, capped at ₹500.
Yes. Late fee under Section 47 is for filing your return after the due date. Interest under Section 50 is for paying your tax dues late. Both can apply together if you're late on both.
No. Late fees must be paid in cash through the Electronic Cash Ledger. ITC can only be used to pay tax liability, not late fees or interest.
Yes. Even with zero tax liability, a Nil return filed after the due date attracts ₹20 per day, capped at ₹500 for GSTR-3B and GSTR-1.
Interest is 18% per annum on your net cash tax liability, calculated day-wise from the day after the due date to the actual payment date. A higher 24% rate applies to wrongly claimed input tax credit.
Yes, for regular returns: ₹2,000 for turnover up to ₹1.5 Cr, ₹5,000 for ₹1.5 Cr–₹5 Cr, and ₹10,000 above ₹5 Cr, as per Notification 19/2021-CT.
Always cross-check on the GST portal at the time of filing — the portal auto-calculates the final figure including any ledger-based interest adjustments.
