Free NRI Tax Calculator for FY 2026-27. Calculate tax on rental income, NRO interest, salary earned in India, and other India-sourced income under the New or Old Tax Regime.
If you're a Non-Resident Indian earning rent, interest, or capital gains from India, this NRI Tax Calculator tells you exactly how much income tax you owe under the Income Tax Act, 2025. Just enter your India-sourced income, pick a regime, and get your full tax breakup — slab tax, surcharge, and cess — in seconds.
An NRI Tax Calculator works out the income tax payable in India by a Non-Resident Indian on income that is earned or accrued in India — think rent from a Mumbai flat, interest on an NRO account, or capital gains from selling Indian mutual funds. It's built for NRIs living and working abroad, returning NRIs checking their RNOR-year liability, and the CAs and NRI-focused advisors who file returns on their behalf.
Unlike a resident, an NRI is taxed only on India-linked income — global income earned outside India stays out of scope. This calculator applies that rule automatically.
Residential status decides everything else that follows. If you don't meet the resident tests in a tax year, every rupee you earn outside India — foreign salary, foreign rental income, foreign business profits — stays outside India's tax net. Only the India leg of your finances enters this calculator.
Residential status — and therefore what counts as taxable income — is decided under Section 6 of the Income Tax Act, 2025, which the Income Tax Department confirms governs tax years starting 1 April 2026 onward, replacing the 1961 Act's residency rules for this year.
Slab Tax = Progressive tax on India-sourced taxable income
(New Regime or Old Regime slab rates — same as resident slabs)
Surcharge = Slab Tax × applicable surcharge rate
(10% on ₹50L–₹1Cr, 15% on ₹1Cr–₹2Cr, 25% on ₹2Cr–₹5Cr;
Old Regime adds 37% above ₹5Cr; New Regime caps at 25% for any income above ₹2Cr)
Cess = (Slab Tax + Surcharge) × 4%
Total Tax Payable = Slab Tax + Surcharge + CessTwo things trip up most NRIs: there's no Section 87A rebate for non-residents even if taxable income is under ₹12 lakh, and there's no relaxed senior-citizen exemption limit under the old regime — both benefits are resident-only.
One more thing this calculator doesn't do: capital gains on shares, mutual funds, and property don't follow slab rates at all — they carry their own flat rates (for example, long-term capital gains on listed equity and equity mutual funds). If your India income is mostly capital gains, use Toolisky's Capital Gains Tax Calculator instead, or add the capital-gains tax separately to whatever this tool computes on your other slab-rate income.
Example: Rohan, an NRI based in Dubai, earns ₹18,00,000 in FY 2026-27 from rent on his Bengaluru flat and interest on his NRO fixed deposits. He opts for the New Regime. His bank has already deducted ₹1,50,000 as TDS.
| Slab | Rate | Tax |
|---|---|---|
| ₹0 – ₹4,00,000 | 0% | ₹0 |
| ₹4,00,000 – ₹8,00,000 | 5% | ₹20,000 |
| ₹8,00,000 – ₹12,00,000 | 10% | ₹40,000 |
| ₹12,00,000 – ₹16,00,000 | 15% | ₹60,000 |
| ₹16,00,000 – ₹18,00,000 | 20% | ₹40,000 |
No 87A rebate applies here even though ₹18 lakh is close to some rebate thresholds resident taxpayers enjoy — because Rohan is an NRI.
The Income Tax Act, 2025 is now the governing law for residential-status determination and NRI taxation for FY 2026-27 (AY 2027-28) — it replaced the Income Tax Act, 1961 for tax years starting 1 April 2026, per the Income Tax Department's official Non-Resident FAQ page. Slab rates and the New Regime structure carried over unchanged from Finance Act 2025 — no fresh slab changes were announced in Budget 2026.
Surcharge for individuals also carried over unchanged: 10% once India income (or total income for residents) crosses ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore, and — only under the Old Regime — 37% above ₹5 crore. The New Regime caps surcharge at 25% no matter how high the income goes. NRIs pay this surcharge on the same slabs and at the same rates as residents; only the rebate and senior-citizen concessions are withheld from NRIs, not the surcharge structure.
If you're unsure which regime saves more, run the numbers through Toolisky's Old vs New Tax Regime Calculator alongside this one.
No. If you qualify as a Non-Resident under Section 6, only income earned or accrued in India is taxable here. Salary credited abroad for work performed abroad stays outside India's tax net.
Yes. NRIs can opt for either the New Regime or the Old Regime, just like resident individuals, and can switch between them each year when filing (subject to business-income restrictions).
No. The Section 87A rebate is available only to resident individuals. NRIs pay slab-wise tax on India income from the first taxable rupee, with no rebate cushion.
Rent from Indian property, interest on NRO accounts, capital gains from Indian shares/property/mutual funds, salary for services rendered in India, and business income from an Indian branch or PE.
No. It calculates India tax liability only. If your resident country has a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement with India, you may claim credit or relief separately when filing in your home country.
Banks and tenants typically deduct TDS at higher flat rates for NRIs (e.g., 30% on rent, up to 20%+ on NRO interest) rather than at slab rates — this calculator helps you check if that TDS matches your actual slab-based liability.
