Instantly calculate the flat 30% tax on your crypto and VDA gains — including surcharge, cess, and TDS credit under Section 115BBH — with India's most accurate crypto tax calculator.
Use this crypto tax calculator to work out exactly how much tax you owe on cryptocurrency, NFT, or other virtual digital asset (VDA) gains in India. The calculator applies the flat 30% tax rate under Section 115BBH of the Income Tax Act, so you get an accurate number in seconds — no spreadsheet needed.
A crypto tax calculator works out the exact tax you owe on gains from selling or transferring cryptocurrency, NFTs, or any other virtual digital asset in India. It applies the flat 30% rate, adds surcharge and cess, and nets off any TDS already deducted by your exchange. This tool is built for retail crypto investors, day traders, NFT creators and collectors, freelancers who accept crypto payments, and CAs or tax consultants who file returns for crypto clients.
The formula comes directly from Section 115BBH, inserted by the Finance Act, 2022:
Capital Gain = Sale Value − Cost of Acquisition
Base Tax = Capital Gain × 30%
Surcharge = Base Tax × Applicable Surcharge Rate
Cess = (Base Tax + Surcharge) × 4%
Total Tax = Base Tax + Surcharge + Cess, rounded off to the nearest ₹10The final rounding step isn't optional — Section 288B of the Income Tax Act requires any amount payable or refundable to be rounded off to the nearest ₹10, so this calculator applies that rounding to your final tax figure, not to each sub-head.
Your applicable surcharge rate depends on your total taxable income slab (0%, 10%, 15%, or 25% under the new regime). Whether VDA income gets the same surcharge cap as listed capital gains at very high income levels (above ₹2 crore or ₹5 crore) isn't explicitly spelt out for Section 115BBH income in the sources we could verify [VERIFY] — if your total income crosses these thresholds, confirm the applicable rate with a CA before filing.
Two rules make crypto tax different from other capital gains:
If your exchange deducted TDS under Section 194S (1% of the sale value, once your transactions cross ₹10,000 in a year, or ₹50,000 for specified persons), that amount is adjusted against your final tax liability, not added on top of it.
Say you bought Ethereum for ₹2,00,000 and sold it later for ₹5,00,000. Your exchange deducted 1% TDS on the sale. Your total income puts you in the 15% surcharge slab.
This is the amount you'd need to pay as advance tax or self-assessment tax, over and above the TDS your exchange already deposited.
Crypto income must be reported separately under Schedule VDA in your income tax return. Don't club it with other capital gains or business income entries — that's a common reason returns get flagged. If you're also checking TDS reconciliation, cross-check rates on Toolisky's TDS Rate Chart for FY 2026-27, which lists current TDS sections including 194S. The 30% rate under Section 115BBH has not changed since it was introduced in Budget 2022, and remains the applicable rate for FY 2025-26.
Yes. Section 115BBH applies a flat 30% tax on VDA gains regardless of your income slab, whether you're a salaried employee, business owner, or full-time trader. Surcharge and 4% cess apply on top of this base rate depending on your total income.
No. Losses from transferring a VDA can only be set off against gains from other VDA transfers, and even that isn't allowed under Section 115BBH. Such losses also cannot be carried forward to future years.
Yes. Swapping one virtual digital asset for another is treated as a "transfer" under the Income Tax Act, so any gain on that swap is taxable at 30%, even if you never converted to rupees.
Section 194S requires a 1% TDS deduction on VDA transfers above ₹10,000 (₹50,000 for specified persons). This TDS is adjusted against your final tax liability calculated under Section 115BBH, not paid in addition to it.
No basic exemption applies specifically to VDA income under Section 115BBH — even a small gain is taxed at 30% from the first rupee, unlike regular income which enjoys a basic exemption slab.
Crypto and VDA transactions must be disclosed under Schedule VDA in your income tax return, separate from other capital gains or business income schedules, with details of each transfer.
